New ASA Ball -- 52/300 = GARBAGE

Posted on Posted by JP on 13th May 2016

Most if not all ASA leagues around the country have migrated to the new 52/300 ball.  If you have NOT already experienced hitting this ball, let me be the first to tell you it is terrible.  Marginal home run hitters will now have warning track power and those who were ever so close before will not even come close now.  In my own testing, on average, my distance fell around 30ft hitting the 52s vs. the old 44/375s with the same bat.

But there is hope......in 2013, ASA changed the bat performance standard to 120 mph from the old 98 mph to offset the ball change.  The new stamp ASA bats are 100 times better than those of the past.  Granted the bats are not as durable, but they do break in very fast and hit the mush ball much better than the ASA bats on the past.  Most can get away shaving the bat a little more aggressively because the ball will not stress the bat as much.

The key to hitting this ball is back spin.  Because it is so soft, the ball tends to over compress and knuckle if you hit it to flush.  The key is hitting the bottom 1/3 of the ball so it generate good back spin which creates lift.  For those who are not used to swinging down and through the zone, this will take some adjusting if you want to master hitting this ball well.
